Recently, Bluepha has been granted by China National Intellectual Property Administration with an invention patent, titled as: "A method for engineering Halomonas and its application in production of P(3HB-co-4HB) ", with a patent number of ZL201810074387.3.
So far, Bluepha has obtained three invention patents for P(3HB-co-4HB) (also referred to as P34HB, a short-chain PHA copolymer) synthesis technology, which are as follows:
ZL201710486320.6 - "Gene cassette for fine control of composition ratio of 4-hydroxybutanoic acid in copolymer and application thereof"
ZL201710832790.3 - "A method for production of polyhydroxyalkanoate by non-sterile fermentation"
ZL201810074387.3 - "A method for engineering Halomonas and its application in production of P(3HB-co-4HB)"
These three patents enable Bluepha to build a solid technological barrier for the production of P34HB using Halomonas. In addition, Bluepha also has four granted invention patents and ten pending patents on PHBHHx (also referred to as PHBH, a medium-chain PHA copolymer) synthesis and related technologies, which help Bluepha maintain its leading position in the PHA synthesis technologies. In February 2022, the Bluepha®️ passed the testing requirements of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union on the positive list of the regulations on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food ((EU) 2019/1338 amending Regulation (EU) No 10/2011), which makes Bluepha the only Chinese company that has passed the EU testing on food-contact materials by the laboratory of an internationally renowned certification agency.
The above-mentioned intellectual property rights and certifications will effectively support the Bluepha®️ in providing Bluepha's partners with a wide range of PHA product types, and providing consumers around the world with cleaner, low-carbon and environment-friendly green materials.
In September 2021, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council issued the Outline for Building a Powerful Country with Intellectual Property Rights (2021-2035), which clearly puts forward the principles of implementing the basic strategy of comprehensively advancing law-based governance, protecting intellectual property rights strictly in accordance with the laws and regulations, and effectively protect social justice and the legitimate rights and interests of right holders. Under the environment of better protection of intellectual property rights by the government, Bluepha will also strictly monitor, prevent and restrain the patent infringement.
About P34HB synthesis technology
The P34HB synthesis technology was initially developed by Metabolix (a USA company) in early 2000 when the weakness of PHB (a short-chain PHA homopolymer) and PHBV (a short-chain PHA copolymer) being difficult to form membrane was overcome. However, it cannot be 100% bio-based as the second monomer still needs to be synthesized by adding petroleum-based precursors. In addition, the downstream processing is difficult, which results in high carbon footprint level and high cost of the final products production. Therefore, it is difficult for P34HB to be recognized by the market. Bluepha's patented technologies break through the limitation of the second monomer of P34HB originating from petroleum, and are expected to revitalize the commercialization of Bluepha®️.
